Pool Lessons Every Tuesday Night 8:00-10:00

Our pool lessons are warm, fun and friendly: skill builders for beginners and experts and a great way to stay in "fighting" shape over the winter. Take our condensed three lesson package for beginners. C'mon back for our open pool sessions for more practice. Then choose an advanced lesson to hone rolling skills or kayak control.

Pool lesson #1 First time kayaker: You'll get familiar with a modern river running kayak and paddle gear. You'll adjust the outfitting and learn to enter and exit the kayak safely. Next practice the basics of boat control including balance, posture, paddle grip and simple strokes. Build confidence upside down by learning to stay in the boat, hip snap and flip the boats with assistance.

Pool lesson #2 Stokes and Balance: Refine your boat control by learing proper propulsion. Strong fundamentals are key. Improve your stability and balance through edging and bracing practice.  Continue to Learn capsize recovery skills and right the boats with assistance.

Pool lesson #3 Rolling Requires Repetition: You'll learn what it takes to roll a kayak upright and get lots of practice. Rolling is complex and disorienting at first, but simple drills and practice will overcome initial fears. True mastery of the roll is a zen inspired process. While some students experience rapid success, most take several weeks to build their strength and agility. Many students repeat the class after additional practice time in our open pool sessions.

Open Pool: When you want simple practice time to "bombproof" your roll or work on strokes or playboating skills you should join our open pool sessions. Because of limited pool space at DU All open pool sessions require pre-registraation.

Advanced Flatwater (Pool) lessons: Even advanced paddlers can hone their skills or learn new ones in the pool. Offered on a rotating basis these lessons will take you further. Join our skill specialists to focus on these topics:

#3 Roll Doctor: Have you got the chills from swimming to much? Who can you call when your once reliable roll dissappears? The Roll Doctor of course. The Doc will analyze your roll to diagnose your ills. Then you'll be prescribed a simple regimen to get it back into shape. The Roll doctor wil get your roll back into fighting form. Offered as a half day private.

#4 Power Strokes with Precision: Are you in the driver's seat? Or is the river doing the steering? The difference in how well you can propel your boat lies in simple stroke mechanics. Get under the hood and learn what makes your boat go. Perform advanced maneuvers by building on a few fundamental concepts. Offered as a half day private.

#5 Flat-water Fundamentals of Playboating: You've seen the new tricks being done in a kayak, and asking yourself… “How do they do that?” If you're asking, this is the class for you. Flatwater Fundamentals starts with the foundation of playboating. You'll learn to control your boat edges, maximize body position, and generate power that you never knew was there. This is a beginner playboating class, so you will need to have a small kayak and a good roll, from there the sky is the limit. Offered as a half day private.

Playboating 101
Playboating 101 starts where the Fundamentals leave off, but this one is taught on the river. You’ll be learning the basics in wave surfing and leading into the realm of vertical play. The main points taught in this class are; wave selection, front and side surfing, spinning, and stern squirts. Offered as a half day private.

Advanced Playboating
Advanced playboating is the next level. This class is for the person that is really looking to take their playboating to new levels. You should be capable of controlled front surfing and controlled spinning. From here we quickly jump into the vertical world. Here is where you'll learn cartwheels, split cartwheels, blunts, and stalls. Offered as a half day private.
